Mitchell Feigenbaum, Persi Diaconis, and Three Writers | CUNY Laureates
On this episode of CUNY Laureates, we profile five more MacArthur Fellows who graduated from the City University of New York. Mitchell Feigenbaum manages to find order in chaos with the discovery of a mathematical constant that now bears his name. Persi Diaconis has studied probability and math all his life, yet his journey to randomness started with magic tricks. Finally, Ocean Vuong, Annie Baker, and Irving Feldman are three very different writers, but together, their experimentation with language and convention pushes the art form into new frontiers.

Why to read antifeminist behaviour in everything.? Once we recognize certain obvious tendenciesin society why always vfocus on it? It is a bit anoying that emphacise on always talking about how women were second class citizen. Today we are facing a propaganda machine that want to erase the past because it was fair to women or to minorities but that was the past. Today we are taking extreme position. 28:49

It's a great book. A lot of the lessons are ones I'm repeating to my 13-year-old daughter. So - thank you 😊 One caveat only (and I hope the author will read this, and take heed!). In the preface, the author says that he uses male pronouns throughout the book because it is nearly always men who are violent. However, this assertion is belied by his use of 'he' and 'him' to refer later to a doctor (unnamed, generic) - and then later in the book, the same happens when referring to a passenger who is late for a plane. I'm afraid this makes the earlier argument about why he uses only male pronouns null. Please don't give a reason that isn't the real reason. Can I suggest that, if there is a new edition, the pronouns get adapted - as per modern usage, where we are beginning to question power hierarchies? It is an irony - which I'm appreciative of - that it's these assumptions, habits, and usages (without questioning) that contribute hugely to said violence against women!* *Ref: Emotional Labor, by Rose Hackman (chapter on Violence)

One of the greats. I heard her often at Covent Garden in the 1980s and 1990s. A superb, rich and very agile mezzo and her Rossini has not been equalled. Like Sutherland she had a real trill.

Here are questions which I do not see the media address regarding congestion pricing: a) would the gridlock predicted to be relieved in Manhattan simply transfer to the boroughs thereby negating the environmental benefits? b) How can one trust the MTA to spend the extra revenue coming in wisely when it is known to overinflate some simple subway track extensions, has had incredible delays completing projects such as East Side Access and extending the Q? Furthermore as one who has experienced train service interruptions for the sack of "signal upgrades" and station improvements, the results seem negligible or just simply maintaining the status quo, who would oversee and have power to reign in the MTA to actually do viable, valuable projects in a timely manner?

The failure to include the fact that the vast majority of the Africans kidnapped from the westernmost coast of Africa (around 1619) were Muslim is an egregious oversight. Sylviane Diouf in her book SERVANTS OF ALLAH documents the fact that some 65% of the Africans brought to America's shores followed a religion called Islam. And, everyone deserves to know the TRULY glorious ancestral history of Americans of African descent as it relates to Islam. At the entrance of the museum is a placard bearing a quote from historian John Hope Franklin, it reads: "We've got to tell the unvarnished truth." I agree.

With such conviction and clarity . The intellect is covered in feeling and it emerges he says. And he is right. I do feel guilty about not writing or reading enough tho, haha when he said a life where you aren’t doing something you love isn’t worth living . And this comment is a feeling.

In New York City, the implementation of congestion pricing has been a topic of debate. While it was set to begin in June 2024, the plan has been postponed indefinitely3. This decision came amidst concerns over the economic impact the tolling program might have on everyday New Yorkers4. It appears that more than 60 percent of New York City’s inhabitants opposed congestion pricing based on polls, reflecting public discontent with the idea5. The reliance on referendums or public opinion polls is a common practice in many cities to gauge support for congestion pricing. This democratic approach ensures that the views of the residents are considered in the decision-making process, especially for policies that directly affect their daily lives and expenses. However, the success of such initiatives can vary greatly depending on the local context, public awareness, and the perceived benefits versus the costs of the program.

The logical thing is : ninety percent of the people who travel to Manhattan to work use public transportation, then those ninety percent are the ones who should pay for that tax to improve a service that suits them and not ten percent remaining percent that do not use the train service.
